Psr J0045{7319: a Dual-line Binary Radio Pulsar

چکیده
Binary radio pulsars are superb tools for mapping binary orbits, because of the precision of the pulse timing method (e.g Taylor & Weisberg 1989). To date, all orbital parameters for binary pulsars have been derived from observations of the pulsar alone. We present the rst observations of the radial velocity variations due to the binary motion of a companion to a radio pulsar. Our results demonstrate that the companion to the Small Magellanic Cloud pulsar PSR J0045{7319 is the B1V star identiied by Kaspi et al. (1994). The mass ratio of the system is 6:3 1:2, which, for a neutron star mass of 1.4 M , implies a mass of 8.8 1.8 M for the companion, consistent with the mass expected for a B1V star. The inclination angle for the binary system is therefore 44 5 , and the projected rotational velocity of the companion is 113 10 km s 1. The heliocentric radial velocity of the binary system is consistent with that of other stars and gas in the same region of the Small Magellanic Cloud.

Spin-orbit Interaction in Neutron Star/main Sequence Binaries and Implications for Pulsar Timing
The spin-induced quadrupole moment of a rapidly rotating star changes the orbital dynamics in a binary system, giving rise to advance (or regression) of periastron and precession of the orbital plane. We show that these effects are important in the recently discovered radio pulsar/main sequence star binary system PSR J0045−7319, and can reliably account for the observed peculiar timing residual...
متن کاملOn the orbital decay of the PSR J0045-7319 Binary
Recent observations of PSR J0045-7319, a radio pulsar in a close eccentric orbit with a massive main sequence B-star companion, indicate that the system’s orbital period is decreasing on a timescale ∼ 5x10 years (Kaspi et al. 1996). Timing observations of PSR J0045-7319 also indicate that the B-star is rotating rapidly, perhaps close to its breakup rotation rate (Lai et al. 1995, Kaspi et al. 1...
متن کاملDynamics of Psr J0045-7319/b-star Binary and Neutron Star Formation
One of the fundamental questions in the studies of pulsars concerns the physical conditions of neutron star at birth. Of particular interest is the initial spin periods and velocities of pulsars, as they are related to such issues as supernova explosion mechanism and gravitational wave emission from core collapse. The PSR J0045-7319 binary (containing a 0.93 s radio pulsar and a massive B-star ...

متن کاملOrbital Decay of the PSR J0045-7319 Binary System: Age of Radio Pulsar and Initial Spin of Neutron Star
Recent timing observations of PSR J0045-7319 reveal that the neutron star/B star binary orbit is decaying on a time scale of |Porb/Ṗorb| = 0.5 Myr, shorter than the characteristic age (τc = 3 Myr) of the pulsar (Kaspi et al. 1996a). We study mechanisms for the orbital decay. The standard weak friction theory based on static tide requires far too short a viscous time to explain the observed Ṗorb...
